Terms of Service
1. Who we are
Selah ("Selah," "we," "us," or "our") is a faith-based wellbeing application that blends evidence-informed psychological exercises with study of Scripture and original Hebrew and Greek words. Selah is operated by The Selah App, LLC, a Florida limited liability company ("Operator").
You can reach us at support@selahapp.app.
By creating an account, tapping "I agree," or otherwise accessing or using Selah (the "Service"), you agree to these Terms of Service ("Terms"). If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
2. What Selah is — and what it is not
Selah is a spiritual and educational wellbeing tool. It offers structured multi-day reflection paths, journaling, a breathing exercise, mood check-ins, original-language word studies, and an AI-assisted conversational companion (the "AI Companion").
Selah is NOT:
- Not professional therapy, counseling, or psychotherapy. The "AI Companion" is a software feature. It is not a licensed therapist, psychologist, psychiatrist, social worker, or counselor, and using it does not create a therapeutic or clinical relationship.
- Not medical or mental-health care. Selah does not diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any condition. It is not a medical device.
- Not a crisis or emergency service. Selah cannot help in an emergency. See Section 9 and the Crisis & Safety Disclaimer.
- Not pastoral counseling or a substitute for your faith community, clergy, or spiritual director.
You agree not to rely on Selah for any of the above. The Medical & Clinical Disclaimer and the Crisis & Safety Disclaimer are incorporated into these Terms by reference and are as binding as the text here.
3. Eligibility and age
Selah is intended for adults 18 and older. By creating an account or using Selah, you represent that you are at least 18 years old (or the age of majority where you live). Selah is not directed to children, and we do not market Selah to anyone under 18.
3.1 Family / Parental Access (ages 13–17)
A parent or legal guardian who is 18 or older and holds a Selah account may enable a parent-administered profile for their own minor child between ages 13 and 17 ("Parental Access"). The parent must complete the Parental Access consent screen, affirm that they are the minor's parent or legal guardian, accept these Terms and the disclaimers on the minor's behalf, supervise use of the AI Companion, and retain the ability to review, disable, export, and request deletion of the minor profile. Selah does not permit independent teen accounts and does not knowingly allow anyone under 13 to access the Service.
In addition, by enabling Parental Access you represent and agree that:
- you are the parent or legal guardian of the minor;
- you have read and accept these Terms, the Medical & Clinical Disclaimer, and the Crisis & Safety Disclaimer on the minor's behalf;
- you understand that Selah is not therapy, medical care, or a crisis service, and that you, not Selah, are responsible for the minor's safety and care; and
- you may withdraw the minor's access at any time.
The minor uses Selah under the parent's or guardian's administration and accountability. Selah does not market to, or independently enroll, anyone under 18.
Guardian certification. Before Parental Access is granted, the consent screen requires the parent or guardian to affirm the following statement, which is captured and logged at onboarding: "By continuing, you certify under penalty of perjury that you are the parent or legal guardian of this minor."
3.2 No access under 13
Selah is not available to children under 13, with or without parental involvement. We do not knowingly permit anyone under 13 to use Selah or knowingly collect personal information from a child under 13. If we learn that a child under 13 has used Selah or that we hold their information, we will terminate the access and delete the information. (See the Privacy Policy, "Children.")
4. Your account
Selah works anonymously by default. You may optionally attach an email address to back up your reflections across devices. You are responsible for:
- keeping access to your email/account secure;
- everything that happens under your account; and
- the accuracy of information you give us.
We use passwordless "magic link" sign-in. Anyone with access to your email may be able to access your account. Do not share Selah with someone you would not trust with your reflections.
5. License to use Selah
We grant you a limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use Selah for your own personal, non-commercial spiritual and wellbeing use. You may not:
- copy, resell, sublicense, or commercially exploit the Service or its content;
- reverse-engineer, scrape, or extract the Service's content or source except as allowed by law;
- use the Service to build a competing product or to train a machine-learning model;
- attempt to defeat rate limits, security, or access controls (see Section 8);
- use automated systems (bots, scripts) to access the Service except standard search indexing;
- upload unlawful, infringing, harmful, or abusive content; or
- use the Service to harm yourself or others or in violation of any law.
6. Content and intellectual property
Our content. The Selah name, the path content, word studies, original writing, design, software, and the "look and feel" are owned by the Operator or its licensors and are protected by intellectual-property law. Scripture quotations are limited to the Amplified® Bible (AMP) and the New American Standard Bible 2020 (NASB 2020), used under The Lockman Foundation permissions. The in-app Legal/About screen includes the full required Lockman copyright notice, the translation marks, and a clickable www.Lockman.org link. Selah maintains a verse-use log and will not exceed the applicable permission limits (up to 1,000 verses, under 50% of the work, and no complete book) without written permission. Selah does not use the New Living Translation (NLT) or any other translation that requires separate written permission for commercial use.
Your content. Your journal entries, reflections, mood check-ins, and messages to the AI Companion ("Your Content") remain yours. You grant us a limited license to store, process, and display Your Content solely to operate the Service for you (for example, to save a journal entry, sync it across your devices, or send your message to the AI Companion for a response). We do not sell Your Content. We do not use Your Content to train AI models. See the Privacy Policy for detail on how Your Content is handled, including third-party processing by our AI provider.
7. The AI Companion — important limitations
The AI Companion generates responses using a third-party large language model (Anthropic's Claude, via the Claude API). By using it you acknowledge:
- Its responses are generated by software and may be wrong, incomplete, or inappropriate.
- It is not a substitute for a licensed professional and does not provide diagnosis, treatment, clinical assessment, safety planning, legal, financial, or pastoral counseling. Do not use the AI Companion to make decisions about medication, self-harm, abuse, violence, emergency care, or whether to start or stop professional treatment.
- We apply safety measures (including crisis-resource responses), but no automated system is perfect and it may fail to detect distress or may respond imperfectly.
- Your messages are sent to our AI provider to generate a response (see Privacy Policy).
- You should never act on an AI Companion response in a way that could harm you or others without consulting a qualified human professional.
8. Acceptable use and system protection
To keep Selah free and available for everyone, you agree not to:
- send automated, scripted, or excessive requests, or otherwise attempt to overload, disrupt, or run up the operating cost of the Service (including the AI Companion and AI card features);
- circumvent or probe rate limits, authentication, or other security controls;
- access data that is not yours, or attempt to access another user's account or content;
- introduce malware or attempt to gain unauthorized access to our systems or our providers' systems.
We use rate limiting and other protections and may suspend or block access (by account, device, or network) that we reasonably believe violates this section, without notice, to protect the Service and its users.
9. No emergency services
If you are in danger or thinking about harming yourself or others, Selah cannot help you in time. Call 911 (or your local emergency number), call or text 988 (the U.S. Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), or text HOME to 741741 (Crisis Text Line). The Crisis & Safety Disclaimer explains this further and is part of these Terms.
10. Donations and the supporter tier
Selah's core 7-day paths, the AI Companion, and the word studies are free. We may offer an optional way to give ("donations") and an optional "supporter" tier that helps cover operating cost and may unlock additional content or features. The Subscription & Support Terms govern any giving and are incorporated by reference. Giving is voluntary and is not required to access the core ministry content.
11. Disclaimers of warranty
THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE," WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, and any warranty that the Service will be uninterrupted, secure, error-free, or that any content (including AI Companion responses or any spiritual or wellbeing guidance) is accurate, reliable, or suitable for your situation. You use Selah at your own risk. Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties, so some of the above may not apply to you.
12. Limitation of liability
TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, THE OPERATOR AND ITS OWNERS, CONTRACTORS, AND PROVIDERS WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR ANY LOSS arising out of or related to your use of (or inability to use) the Service, including any reliance on the AI Companion or any content, any emotional or physical harm, or any decision you make based on the Service — even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, the Operator's total liability for all claims relating to the Service will not exceed the greater of (a) the total amount you paid or gave to Selah in the 12 months before the claim, or (b) US $100.
Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, including fraud, willful misconduct, or gross negligence where waiver is not permitted; statutory consumer rights that cannot be waived; payment or refund rights required by law; or claims for injunctive or equitable relief.
13. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless the Operator and its owners and providers from any claim or demand (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your misuse of the Service, your violation of these Terms, or your violation of any law or the rights of a third party.
14. Changes to the Service and to these Terms
We are actively building Selah and may add, change, or remove features (including the free/supporter boundary) at any time. We may update these Terms; if we make material changes, we will update the "Effective date" and, where appropriate, ask you to re-acknowledge in the app. Continued use after changes means you accept the updated Terms.
15. Termination
You may stop using Selah at any time and may request deletion of your data (see Privacy Policy). We may suspend or terminate your access if you violate these Terms or to protect the Service.
16. Governing law and disputes
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Florida, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules.
Informal resolution + arbitration: You agree to first try to resolve any dispute informally by contacting us. Any dispute not resolved within 30 days will be resolved by binding individual arbitration administered by the American Arbitration Association (AAA) under its Consumer Arbitration Rules. The seat and venue will be Orange County, Florida, unless applicable consumer law requires otherwise. Either party may bring an individual claim in small claims court where permitted. You may opt out of arbitration by emailing us within 30 days after first accepting these Terms. No class, consolidated, or representative proceedings are permitted except where that waiver is unenforceable by law. You and we waive any right to a jury trial.
17. Miscellaneous
If any provision is found unenforceable, the rest remain in effect. Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver. These Terms, plus the Privacy Policy and the disclaimers referenced here, are the entire agreement between you and us regarding the Service.
